Samui
While on a sabbatical in Koh Samui, Thailand, in 2002, I decided to volunteer at the Samui Dog Rescue Center with my partner, Chris.
When we entered the gate, we were surrounded by hundreds of dogs, all competing for our attention. The owner greeted us from the porch of the Thai house/office, holding a puppy that had been rescued that morning by a tourist couple who found the homeless pup eating rice out of trash cans.
We left with that puppy, later named Samui, who became our constant canine companion and muse for the next 16 years.
